International Standards and Management Systems
In its application of the first principle of the Policy for Health, Safety at work, Environment and Social Responsibility, Pirelli Tyre is very active in the field of Management Systems that it uses to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of its processes and further reduce their impact on employee health, work safety conditions and the external environment.

Quality
ISO 9001: Pirelli Tyre  has boasted its own Quality Management System since 1970, gradually introducing it at all sites. Currently, all Pirelli manufacturing sites are certified compliant to the latest version of this standard.
ISO/TS 16949: In order to meet the requirements of car manufacturers, in 1999 Pirelli Tyre achieved certification for its Quality Management System to standard ISO/TS 16949 and conformity has since been maintained. All sites that supply car manufacturers have achieved this certification.
ISO/IEC 17025: In 1993, the Pirelli Materials and Products and Outdoor Testing Laboratory introduced a Quality Management System that has been certified compliant to standard ISO/IEC 17025. This system maintains conformity with the current version of the standard.

Environment:
ISO 14001: In 1998, an Environmental Management System conforming to the requirements of standard ISO 14001 was implemented. The process is now consolidated and as at 31/12/2007 all currently-operative manufacturing sites have a certified environmental management system. The latest is the new Slatina steel cord manufacturing works in Romania that was recently certified to both ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Forthcoming certification will regard sites still undergoing development such as the tyre factory also located in Slatina.
Besides the manufacturing sites, the Pirelli Tyre Centre for scientific assessment of tyre-vehicle performance located in Vizzola Ticino (Lombardy, Italy) is also certified to ISO 14001. This certification is particularly important because the centre, covering an area of about 26 hectares, is inside the Parco Lombardo in Valle del Ticino, forming part of UNESCO's so-called MAB (Man and the Biosphere) areas, a group of 425 biosphere reserves spread across 95 countries worldwide.

Occupational Health and Safety:
OHSAS 18001:
In 2001, this management system approach was extended to Safety Management with the gradual implementation of international standard OHSAS 18001 at Group sites. At year end 2007, 20 of the 24 sites were certified to this standard. The remaining 4 manufacturing sites are also scheduled to achieve certification.

Social Responsibility:
SA 8000: In 2004 the international standard SA 8000 was identified by Pirelli Group  as a benchmark for assessing the consistency of the Group's conduct with the CSR principles specified therein.
This entails frequent performance assessment of local sustainability indicators by all Pirelli Tyre affiliates.
